Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Glow (Sky Chasers #1)
by Amy Kathleen Ryan

What if you were bound for a new world, about to pledge your life to someone you'd been promised to since birth, and one unexpected violent attack made survival—not love—the issue?

Out in the murky nebula lurks an unseen enemy: the New Horizon. On its way to populate a distant planet in the wake of Earth's collapse, the ship's crew has been unable to conceive a generation to continue its mission. They need young girls desperately, or their zealous leader's efforts will fail. Onboard their sister ship, the Empyrean, the unsuspecting families don't know an attack is being mounted that could claim the most important among them...

Fifteen-year-old Waverly is part of the first generation to be successfully conceived in deep space; she was born on the Empyrean, and the large farming vessel is all she knows. Her concerns are those of any teenager—until Kieran Alden proposes to her. The handsome captain-to-be has everything Waverly could ever want in a husband, and with the pressure to start having children, everyone is sure he's the best choice. Except for Waverly, who wants more from life than marriage—and is secretly intrigued by the shy, darkly brilliant Seth.

But when the Empyrean faces sudden attack by their assumed allies, they quickly find out that the enemies aren't all from the outside.

Holy freakin' crap this book was amazing! I expected it to be good, but it was fantastic! I loved it!

So this book follows Waverly and Kieran who are on a ship called The Empyrean heading for a new planet. But the the ship is attacked by The New Horizon and Waverly and Kieran are seperated. Both have a lot to deal with and a lot to come to terms with. A lot of secrets are revealed after that.

First of all, well done to Amy Kathleen Ryan for creating a book with so much mystery and suspense! I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through this book because there was so much being hidden and manipulated that I was hooked!

Waverly was a brilliant character. She did what she had to do to save the lives of the rest of the people left on the ship. She never gave up hope. She was constantly looking for clues to find out what happened and always looking out for all the girls. She was determined, intuitive and just brilliant. She managed to stay strong after everything she'd been put through and everything she found out and I really admired her.

I also really admired Kieran. He was such a strong character as well. Sure he was kind of naive and wasn't ready to take over control of the ship, but he's a teenager and doesn't know everything yet so I don't blame him for getting slightly flustered. He was a genuinely nice character and he was determined to help and save the people on his ship and he'd do anything to save them

Seth was a dick. And I really want to hit him. That's really all I have to say about him because I really dislike him.

So the whole thing going on with the Empyrean and the New Horizon was brilliant. I loved uncovering all the secrets and learning what was lies and what wasn't. The people on the New Horizon were pretty creepy. I felt bad for all the girls who ended up there because they made them do something against their will and it was horrible. I know why they did what they did, but that doesn't make it any better. It was still a shocking thing for them to do.
And what they did to the Empyrean was also shocking! I honestly don't understand why they did that! Really, what was the purpose? They could have just made off with the girls and just forgot about the Empyrean. But no, they go and do that and basically leave them for dead.
I'm still not sure who is the good guys in this series. Because the Empyrean crew have secrets too. Like Seth's dad and the captain seemed extremely pervy and like they'd attack any girl they came across that had boobs (and I think they did it to a couple of the girls). So the Empyrean & the New Horizon both have secrets that still have to be uncovered and I'm looking forward to discovering them.

Overall, I completely fell in love with this book and it's characters. I'm a bit unsure of the ending because of Waverly and Seth, so I'm quite excited to see what they're going to do in the next book!
