Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.
In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.
Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?
I'd been extremely intrigued by this book for a while before I decided to finally buy myself a copy. I'd seen so many amazing reviews that I was kind of scared that I wasn't going to like it as much as everyone else. But I did. It was such a freaking amazing book! There were some things I wish there had been more of, but the storyline and the characters made up for it.
Celaena is such a BADASS character. Yes, badass did have to be in caps because she's just that awesome. She's an assassin! And she's the best assassin there is! AND she's only 18 years old! I mean, that's just amazing that she can be the best assassin there is at such a young age. She's feisty, intelligent, snarky and she's a bookworm! I have to say, that is one quality I didn't expect from her so I was extremely surprised. She's intuitive and curious and I really really loved her.
At first, I thought Dorian was going to be an ass. But after getting a bit of an insight into his world and seeing the first interaction between him and his father, I knew I was going to love him. He's the complete opposite of what I first thought. He's caring and gentle. He wants the best for his kingdom which is why he's so determined to win this tournament. He's sweet and kind, and even though Celaena is an assassin, he does everything in his power to make sure she is happy.
I loved Chaol as well. He and Celaena had some brilliant interactions. He's so funny and protective. To start with, he was just trying to protect Dorian from Celaena but by the end he seemed to be protecting Celaena. They had such a brilliant relationship. It was kind of like a love/hate relationship most of the time. They were great friends.
The romance in this book wasn't a major part off the book, but it was definitely there.
First of all, we had the full on romance between Celaena and Dorian. I saw that coming a mile off. They were just so drawn to each other and I really wanted them to get together so that maybe Celaena could have a happy ending and get the life she deserved.
And then there was also Celaena and Chaol. Now, there's a definitely attraction there. I know for definite that Chaol likes her I just can't tell whether Celaene reciprocates or not. Maybe I'll find out in the next book.
I loved everything about the storyline. I also liked how there was something in the storyline that wasn't mentioned on the back of the book, which meant I was even more intrigued because I knew nothing about it and didn't expect it! There was a mystery, magic and hell of a lot of fighting. I enjoyed discovering about this world and learning about all of the characters and hearing their back stories. I would have like a bit more assassin-y behaviour, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that in the next book.
Overall, this was just such a fantastic book filled to the brim with action and mystery. If you haven't read this yet, I seriously recommend picking up a copy.
This book was amazing! I loved it just as much as you and of course badass should be in all caps. :)
