What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang

What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles #1)
by Kat Zhang

I should not exist. But I do.

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

The concept of this story is so unique. Two souls that share the same body, but one soul becomes dominant and takes over and the other on disappears. Or, that's what is supposed to happen. Eva and Addie are different. Addie is the dominant soul, but Eva hasn't disappeared. They know they're in danger so they pretend that Eva has disappeared so that they can stay safe.

This storyline was so intriguing from the start. I was very interested to see how Eva and Addie talk to each other and deal with being two people in the one body. I was also really interested to find out why these people are feared and I want to know how the whole two souls thing works anyways. Like, if it's always been like that or if something happened to cause it.

The whole two souls thing is kind of like having twins and knowing you'll only be allowed to keep one of them. It was a pretty weird and scary idea. Having two kids, and knowing that eventually you'll only have one. It must be such a horrible thing. Getting attached to both souls only to have one suddenly disappear sounds awful.

Eva was my favourite. Sure, Addie was alright. She could be kind of a bitch at some points and kind of selfish, but I did like her. She was a strong character. But Eva was definitely my favourite. She was more observant and friendly. I loved her determination to stay. She helped Addie a lot and when Eva wasn't around, Addie was out of sorts. They're like one person. Addie needs Eva, and Eva needs Addie.

And then one day at school, Eva convinces Addie to go home with a girl called Hally. And then Eva and Addie realise they're not alone.

Hally/Lissa were kind of full on. They way they approached Addie and tried to get her to admit to being a hybrid was strange. I'm sure they could have approached it a better way and maybe Ryan/Devon would have. But unfortunately it was down to those two. I liked Hally/Lissa. They were friendly enough and you could always tell who was in control because they both has slightly different personalities.

And then there's Devon/Ryan. Ryan was my favourite out of those two. Devon was more moody and reserved whereas Ryan was friendly, caring and sweet. But both of them were extremely helpful and they wouldn't be the same without the two of them there.

The storyline was pretty disturbing when it came to the hybrids and what they did to them. I honestly didn't understand why they were so threatened by them. The hybrids are just like normal people, just with an extra person in their head. I actually think the hybrids would be more useful. You'd always have that person in your head to give you advice on situations.

The ending was so sweet and I can't wait for the next book to see how Eva and Addie are going to communicate and co-exist.
If you haven't read What's Left of Me yet, I definitely recommend it. It's a unique and intriguing story that leaves you wondering what you would do if you were in this kind of situation. It's a fantastic story.
